High-class new wine project

Winemakers Anton Bauer and Mathias Ruttenstock present RESPIC, collaboratively produced wines from Röschitz in the northern Weinviertel.

An endeavor that brings the region and its potential for great wines into focus.

It is the love for craftsmanship and the Weinviertel that connects the two winemakers. Mathias Ruttenstock from Röschitz worked for many years with Anton Bauer am Wagram, and their professional connection quickly turned into a friendship. In 2021, the two joined forces and experimentally vinified a Grüner Veltliner. After this highly successful wine experiment, they decided to put their cooperation on a professional footing and founded RESPIC.

A wine project named after the medieval designation of Röschitz, which aims to give new value to artisanal work and the authentic character of the local grapes. With the 2021 vintage and three wines, they have now launched. The Grüner Veltliner Messwein, the Grüner Veltliner Ried Königsberg, and a Merlot barrel sample were presented in early September at Mittergrabern Castle in Weinviertel, which the owner, Paul Gessl, gladly made available to the two winemakers and a small group of guests.

„I see myself as an ambassador for the Weinviertel region and have known Mathias Ruttenstock since our school days. I am very pleased that he and Toni Bauer are enriching the Röschitz region with their outstanding wines. Wine is an important cultural asset,“ said the managing director of NÖ Kulturwirtschaft. The wines are available through Weingut Anton Bauer and in well-stocked specialist retail stores.

„Respic“ was the name of the wine village Röschitz in the High Middle Ages, first documented in 1197. 825 years later, the name is being revived with three wines. Anton Bauer and Mathias Ruttenstock want to express the beautiful and original Weinviertel in its purest form through them. Manual labor, origin, and working in harmony with nature are the focus. The "Messwein" and Merlot are vinified at Weingut Anton Bauer in Feuersbrunn, while the "Riedenveltliner" is processed at Weingut Ruttenstock. The label design, featuring the stylized Röschitz coat of arms, comes from the Viennese design duo Nemecek and Stock, and a dedicated small website is in the works.

The Ried Königsberg. The Ried Königsberg is located on the 325-meter-high Königsberg in Röschitz, Weinviertel, and is surrounded by cooling acacia forests to the north and west. The Respic vineyards face east, and the vines grow in loess with a loamy-silty, calcareous subsoil.
